Neighbourhood Watch Scheme Revisited

The Parish Council is working with North Yorkshire Police to see whether we can rejuvenate the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in Claxton and Sand Hutton. The North Yorkshire Police website describes the scheme as:-
Neighbourhood Watch is a long established countywide voluntary organisation based on the simple philosophy of “getting together with your neighbours to reduce local crime and disorder to make your neighbourhood a safer and better place to live, work and play”.

It sounds to be a really good idea for a rural village community like ours.

But for the idea to work in our villages, we need some residents to want to join and support the scheme. Hopefully you will have worked out that there is a Saturday Social event this Saturday 20th April in the Village Hall at 10.30am! We are hoping that Gail Cook from Ryedale District Council, PCSO Nicki Pounder and also Ryedale South Beat Manager PC Paul Fenwick will come along with leaflets and information and will be able to chat to you about what is involved. It is a great chance to find out more, talk to the police and have a piece of cake at the same time!

Look out for more information on the NHW scheme on this website and notice boards in the coming weeks.

Firework Displays within the Parish

Many people enjoy the spectacle of fireworks and their use at celebrations other than on Bonfire Night, is on the increase. Following concerns raised to the Parish Council, if you are thinking of holding a firework display, please spare a thought for those neighbours whose pets or farm animals can be extremely frightened by fireworks and consider putting a note on the Parish Website and/or the village notice boards regarding planned firework displays. This will allow your neighbours to keep pets indoors or make other arrangements to keep their animals calm on the night in question.

Saturday Social

It was good to see so many parisioners attend the Saturday Social yesterday and everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves. This time the theme was ‘buy local’ and there were great produce items available – scrummy homemade buns from Jack, honey from Fiona, beautiful jewellery from Deborah, greeting cards from Rose Trading (with all profits going to the De-Fib appeal), flour from Yorkshire Organic Millers (Spaunton Bank), plants, preserves and who could forget Jennie arriving with a plate of her famous pork pies still warm, with the aroma filling the hall.

There were refreshments aplenty and thanks must go to the ladies of the WI for making so many cups of tea & coffee. The heritage display was fascinating especially those genuine mini Claxton bricks, the villages’ website was up and running, the community library was open and we found out about the 2 newest clubs – Shutterbugs and the forthcoming Knit & Natter group. Not forgetting Liz updating us on the De-Fib appeal (donations are still most welcome!) and information was available about the Village Produce Show in Sept. Finally, our very own Olympic Games Volunteer Anne White popped in to tell us about her experiences ‘down South’.
Apologies if I’ve left anything out – there was just so much going on. Thanks to everyone who made yesterday’s event such a great success.
