Saturday Social

Saturday Social latest! Andrew Woods, Curator of Numismatics at the York Museums Trust will be bringing a selection of artefacts from the Claxton Hoard. Found locally inside a leaden box, the Hoard (which is Viking in origin), was unearthed by a plough on the 12th September 1807.  It consisted of approx 270 coins and an assortment of silver arm bands. Andrew will be inviting local people to add to the Museums knowledge of the area where the Claxton Hoard was found. So, come along on Saturday 6th September and see some real treasure!

Knitting Wool

Calling all knitters! Our resident knitting guru Rachel will be bringing lots of different wool to the Spring Social this Saturday so if you want some very reasonably priced wool be sure to come along and see her. Rachel’s wool is just one of a variety of local produce on offer this Saturday 10.30am – 12.30. Hope to see you there!

Thank You Litter Pickers

What a pile! Thank you to all the litter pickers who helped out over the weekend and collected many, many bags of rubbish from our paths and verges. Both villages are looking much smarter.

About 25 litter pickers of all ages helped collect rubbish. As usual the ‘finds’ were varied from cans, glass bottles, crisp packets, food wrappers to the more unexpected traffic cones, a pair of waders, CDs, gloves, Yellow pages, toys and some other grim items that I won’t mention! After all the collecting, volunteers met at the Village Hall and were rewarded with tasty bacon sandwiches and a cup of tea. A special mention should go to Peter for collecting all the bags in his trailer and to Angela for very organised bacon sandwich making!

Not only is litter unsightly and unhygienic for us humans, our local pets and wildlife are at risk from litter. Thousands of animals are injured every year by litter and so we have helped our local wildlife too. Thank you to all those who joined the Parish Council to help.

Dog Fouling

Dog mess is an unpleasant aspect of dog ownership but it is every owner’s duty to clean up after their dog.

Unfortunately, there is an increase in dog mess being left in Claxton & Sand Hutton and whilst many dog owners do always clear up after their dog, some are clearly not doing so. The Parish Council therefore ask that all dog owners please ensure they clear up after their pets and either use the dog waste bins provided in Claxton or take it home and dispose of it in domestic bins.

It is an offence to leave your dog’s mess behind. If you are caught not clearing up after your dog, you could be prosecuted and fined up to £1000.

Please help to keep our community clean and pleasant for all.

Saturday Social

Don’t forget tomorrow’s Saturday Social in the village hall from 10.30am – 12.30pm.

Local produce and plants to buy. Get a sneak preview of this year’s village show. Find out what the local heritage group is doing.

The community library will also be open – we now have over 500 books and DVDs to borrow.

Come for refreshments & home-made cakes with your neighbours!

Neighbourhood Watch Scheme Revisited

The Parish Council is working with North Yorkshire Police to see whether we can rejuvenate the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in Claxton and Sand Hutton. The North Yorkshire Police website describes the scheme as:-
Neighbourhood Watch is a long established countywide voluntary organisation based on the simple philosophy of “getting together with your neighbours to reduce local crime and disorder to make your neighbourhood a safer and better place to live, work and play”.

It sounds to be a really good idea for a rural village community like ours.

But for the idea to work in our villages, we need some residents to want to join and support the scheme. Hopefully you will have worked out that there is a Saturday Social event this Saturday 20th April in the Village Hall at 10.30am! We are hoping that Gail Cook from Ryedale District Council, PCSO Nicki Pounder and also Ryedale South Beat Manager PC Paul Fenwick will come along with leaflets and information and will be able to chat to you about what is involved. It is a great chance to find out more, talk to the police and have a piece of cake at the same time!

Look out for more information on the NHW scheme on this website and notice boards in the coming weeks.

Saturday Social
